Global Industrial Robotics Installations and Operating Stock

Annual installations show new deployments during a period; operational stock counts robots in use. They are different measures and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported 4,281,585 industrial robots operating worldwide in 2023, up 10% year over year. The same release recorded 541,302 installations during 2023, the second-highest annual total in history and 2% below the 2022 record of 552,946 units.

Global measure Period Reported result
Industrial robots in operation 2023 4,281,585; up 10%
New industrial-robot installations 2023 541,302
New installations 2022 552,946; later comparable release
Operational industrial-robot stock 2024 4,664,000; up 9%

An earlier IFR World Robotics 2023 release reported the 2022 global installation record as 553,052 units, 5% above 2021. The slight difference between 553,052 and 552,946 is retained as reported because the releases may reflect later revision or rounding.

The later IFR 2024 release put operational stock at 4,664,000 in 2024, up 9% from 2023. It also reported that China accounted for 54% of global deployments in 2024, based on rounded deployment totals.

The 2024 industry pattern was mixed: electrical and electronics was the leading customer industry after installations grew 2%, while automotive demand fell 7%. These are year-over-year installation comparisons, not measures of productivity, robot quality or return on investment.

Asia dominated annual deployments in both measured years, while Europe and the Americas represented smaller shares of new installations. Regional shares refer to annual deployments, not installed operating stock.

Region 2022 share of new deployments 2023 share of new deployments 2023 installations
Asia 73% 70% Not stated in the supplied regional release
Europe 15% 17% 92,393; up 9%
Americas Not stated in the supplied release 10% 55,389; down 1% from 2022

The 2023 regional figures come from the IFR global factory report. Europe reached 92,393 installations, while EU destinations accounted for 73,534, or 80% of the IFR Europe total, up 2%.

The Americas installed 55,389 robots in 2023, 1% below the 2022 record. The earlier IFR regional release recorded 56,053 installations in the Americas in 2022, up 8% and above the 2018 peak of 55,212.

For 2024, the IFR reported North America at 9% of global installations, down from 11% in 2023. Europe declined 8% year over year and represented 16% of the global annual market; these 2024 shares concern installations, not stock.

China, Japan, South Korea and India Robotics Data

China was the largest national installation market in 2023, while India recorded the fastest growth among the named major Asian markets. Japan and South Korea remained large established markets despite small year-over-year declines.

Country 2023 installations Change from prior year Additional measure
China 276,288 51% of global installations Just under 1.8 million operating robots
Japan 46,106 Down 9% 2022: 50,435 units in later release
South Korea 31,444 Down 1% 2023 density: 1,012 per 10,000 employees
India 8,510 Up 59% Automotive: 3,551; up 139%

According to the IFR 2023 factory report, China’s 276,288 installations were its second-highest recorded result, after 290,144 in 2022. Chinese manufacturers held 47% of China’s domestic industrial-robot market in 2023, compared with about 28% over the prior decade.

The same source says China’s operational stock was just under 1.8 million units in 2023. The IFR 2023 regional release reports average annual installation growth of 13% in China from 2017 through 2022.

Japan’s 2022 installation count appears as 50,435 in the later IFR release, after 55,240 in 2018. The earlier release gives 50,413 for 2022, up 9% from 49,908 in 2019; both figures are retained because the releases differ slightly.

India’s 2023 automotive installations reached 3,551, up 139%, within its 8,510-unit national total. These are installation counts, not operating-stock counts.

European Industrial Robotics Statistics by Country

European national results varied widely in 2023. Germany had the largest reported installation total, while the United Kingdom, Slovakia and Hungary posted the strongest listed percentage increases.

Country 2023 installations Year-over-year change
Germany 28,355 Up 7%
Italy 10,412 Down 9%
France 6,386 Down 13%
Spain 5,053 Up 31%
United Kingdom 3,830 Up 51%
Slovakia 2,174 Up 48%
Hungary 1,657 Up 31%

These country figures are from the IFR factory report. The source identifies automotive investment as a driver in Spain and automotive assembly as a driver in the United Kingdom.

The earlier IFR 2023 report recorded Germany at 36% of EU installations in 2022 and Italy at 16%. France installed 7,380 robots in 2022, up 13%, representing 10% of the EU market.

The EU total and the broader Europe total should not be confused: EU destinations represented 80% of the 92,393-robot Europe total in 2023. The reported 2024 Europe decline is an annual-installation change, not evidence that the region’s operating stock fell by the same percentage.

Americas Industrial Robot Installations and Applications

The United States remained the largest listed market in the Americas in 2023, while application patterns differed by country and industry.

Market or application Period Installations or share
United States, all industries 2023 37,587; down 5%
US automotive 2023 12,421; down 15%
US metal and machinery 2023 4,171; up 8%
US electrical and electronics 2023 3,900; up 1%
Canada, all industries 2023 4,311; up 37%
Mexico, all industries 2023 5,832; down 3%

The IFR factory report says automotive represented 58% of Canadian installations in 2023. In Mexico, automotive accounted for 70% of the robot market and installed 4,087 units, down 5%.

The earlier IFR regional release recorded 39,576 US installations in 2022, up 10% and just below the 2018 peak of 40,373. US automotive installations rose 47% to 14,472 in 2022, representing 37% of US installations.

That same release recorded 6,000 Mexican installations in 2022, up 13%, and 1,858 Brazilian installations, up 4% from the prior year. Year-specific application totals should be read alongside the corresponding national total rather than treated as a separate regional stock measure.

Industrial Robot Density and Manufacturing Automation

Robot density measures operational industrial robots relative to manufacturing employees. The denominator may cover all manufacturing or a specific industrial branch, so density is a ratio—not a direct count of machines or a measure of productivity, labor displacement or return on investment.

The IFR robot-density release reported a global average of 162 robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees in 2023, more than double the 74 recorded seven years earlier. Asia reached 182, up 7.6%, while the EU reached 219, up 5.2%.

Country or region 2023 density, robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees Additional period or note
South Korea 1,012 Highest worldwide in 2023
Singapore 770 Second in 2023; small employee base can raise ratio
China 470 Up from 402 in 2022
Germany 429 Density grew 5% annually, 2018–2023
Japan 419 Density grew 7% annually, 2018–2023
United States 295 Tenth worldwide in 2023

The same IFR release ranked South Korea first, Singapore second, China third, Germany fourth and Japan fifth on the 2023 measure. Germany’s and Japan’s growth rates describe density over 2018–2023, not annual installation growth.

A later IFR comparison gives separate latest values of 1,220 for South Korea, 818 for Singapore and 449 for Germany. Because that comparison is a later update than the 2023 World Robotics release, its period should not be substituted for the explicitly dated 2023 figures.
